The Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich, together with seven other Swiss museums, is investigating the provenance of objects from the Kingdom of Benin (Nigeria) in its collections as part of the "Benin Initiative Switzerland". Last week, this project reached an important milestone with the visit of a delegation from Nigeria to all the institutions involved in the initiative and to the Benin Forum, where the current report of the collaboration to date was presented.
A team of researchers, scholars and artists from Nigeria, led by the Director General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments Prof. Dr. Abba Tijani and His Royal Highness Prince Aghatise Erediauwa visited the UZH Museum of Ethnology last Wednesday and inspected the 18 objects from the Kingdom of Benin in the collection. Last Thursday, 2 February 2023, the Swiss Benin Forum took place at the Museum Rietberg, where the report on the first phase of the project was handed over to the delegation and a jointly prepared statement (PDF, 92 KB) was read out.
The Federal Office of Culture (FOC) will also fund the next phase of the Benin Initiative Switzerland project, so that the work will continue to be supported until February 2024.
